Managing People Checklist

I work often with David Rock’s SCARF model in my coaching of small business owners. I developed this checklist for managing people in a small business. I would love feedback if you use it!

Check the boxes which are true for your business and identify further actions to build a protective SCARF for your business

Status

  • People know their role in the business is important
  • People can say with pride what they do in the business
  • People are able to appreciate the work that individuals do in the business

What further action will you take to increase status for you and others in the business?

Certainty

  • Everyone in the business is sure they can cover their basic expenses at the end of the month
  • Everyone in the business knows how much they can expect to be paid
  • Everyone in the business knows what their working hours are and when they can expect to take leave

What further action will you take to increase certainty for you and others in the business?

Autonomy

  • People are clear what their job is and they do not need reminding
  • People have all the skills they need to do their job
  • People have everything they need (materials, resources etc) to do their job

What further action will you take to increase autonomy for you and others in the business?

Relatedness

  • People understand how their role and work helps to make a successful business
  • There is trust amongst the people working in the business
  • People feel they are part of the same team working together

What further action will you take to increase relatedness for you and others in the business?

Fairness

  • No-one gets special treatment in the business
  • The rules and procedures for the business are known and clear to everyone in the business
  • There is the same reward for the same amount of effort or work for everyone in the business

What further action will you take to increase fairness for you and others in the business?
