New Year River Resolution

24223422855_66c884da12_kI can still feel the river so that I am stillness and the banks move past me on either side. My eyes still search for that silver line, thick as mercury, where the river turns a corner, and drops to get ever closer to the sea.

I search all along that line for a quickening, for a break in which to steer my boat, for a place of smooth passage.

And all the time I’m searching, I’m sitting straighter in my boat and tightening my sunglasses because I will only really know when I ‘m there, when I’m right in it, and I can also see white waves splashing up. And always, as the river hastens closer to the drop, I hear that voice calling out in the whole wide sky through white geometric clouds: “There is plenty of time.”

Then we are together again, River and I, pouring beside a shiny black rock, bouncing through giant waves, coasting through speeding water. And we feel the stillness again as the banks move past so fast.

More of us

What do I really want? I want more of the vibe I experienced at Westlake Toastmasters this morning. I just got back on a high of good feeling from good people and I think it boils down to this:

  • Everyone is welcomed and everyone counts
  • Everyone is invited to show up as they are and with more of themselves
  • Everyone is invited to make mistakes, to learn, and to laugh

Christmas and the festive season seem a good time to take this forward. Onward to less of me and more of us.

Crossing the Threshold

Which do you choose? The blue pill or the red pill? You remember Neo in the movie the Matrix? The blue pill keeps you in the world as you know it, the red pill brings you new knowledge and awareness – but once you take it, there is no going back and you have crossed the threshold.

That phrase “crossing the threshold” comes from Joseph Campbell’s “The Hero’s Journey.” What Campbell did was to study hero myths, stories of heroes from all around the world, from different cultures and across time, and he found that every story had the same basic pattern.

The moment of Eve biting the apple, of Dorothy setting out on the yellow brick road, of Neo taking the red pill, he called “crossing the threshold.” Crossing the threshold is where the adventure really begins. I’ve noticed that it’s people who are taking the red pill, are the people who come for coaching.

Show up more often

“I’ve found that luck is quite predictable. If you want more luck, take more chances. Be more active. Show up more often.” BRIAN TRACY

To Be Alive

Fulfillment is about being fully alive. Fulfillment is the state of fully expressing who we are doing what is right for us. Clients have a sense of that feeling. They describe it as wholeness, satisfaction, a sense of rightness and harmony. A word we use for this feeling is “resonance.” Life is vibrating at a frequency at which everything we most value is in alignment. We feel it in the choices we make. The vibration in the moment may be very dramatic, thunderous, exciting, edgy. Or it may be still, serene, pastel, intimate. It might be a unique combination of all of those qualities — defying physics and our metaphors. But the client will feel the resonance. The pieces of their lives or careers come together in a very personal sense of wholeness and of feeling very alive. It may be experienced through doing meaningful work, feeling well used, contributing, giving and receiving, playing to win, being in the flow, creative, expressed. It is an experience of being complete.

Managing People Checklist

I work often with David Rock’s SCARF model in my coaching of small business owners. I developed this checklist for managing people in a small business. I would love feedback if you use it!

Check the boxes which are true for your business and identify further actions to build a protective SCARF for your business

Status

  • People know their role in the business is important
  • People can say with pride what they do in the business
  • People are able to appreciate the work that individuals do in the business

What further action will you take to increase status for you and others in the business?

Certainty

  • Everyone in the business is sure they can cover their basic expenses at the end of the month
  • Everyone in the business knows how much they can expect to be paid
  • Everyone in the business knows what their working hours are and when they can expect to take leave

What further action will you take to increase certainty for you and others in the business?

Autonomy

  • People are clear what their job is and they do not need reminding
  • People have all the skills they need to do their job
  • People have everything they need (materials, resources etc) to do their job

What further action will you take to increase autonomy for you and others in the business?

Relatedness

  • People understand how their role and work helps to make a successful business
  • There is trust amongst the people working in the business
  • People feel they are part of the same team working together

What further action will you take to increase relatedness for you and others in the business?

Fairness

  • No-one gets special treatment in the business
  • The rules and procedures for the business are known and clear to everyone in the business
  • There is the same reward for the same amount of effort or work for everyone in the business

What further action will you take to increase fairness for you and others in the business?

Evidence for coaching through looking at a chain of impact

The Bailey Group, which work with organizational transformation in the US, acknowledge that it’s difficult to measure the direct impact of coaching on sales and profits but suggest looking at a chain of impact: “Research shows that the chain of impact from coaching leads to improved leadership effectiveness which in turn leads to tangible business impacts such as increased productivity, higher quality of work, retention of key employees and improved customer service. The less tangible, but equally important, business impacts include improved relationships and team work, higher job satisfaction, and reduced conflict (McGovern, Lindemann, Vergara, Murphy, Barker, Warrenfeltz, 2001). What coaching is about

We can make our minds so like still water that beings gather about us that they may see, it may be, their own images, and so live for a moment with a clear, perhaps even with a fiercer life because of our quiet. WILLIAM BUTLER YEATS

From The Cat’s Table

There is a story, always ahead of you. Barely existing. Only gradually do you attach yourself to it and feed it. You discover the carapace that will contain and test your character. You find in this way the path of your life. MICHAEL ONDAATJE

Live the life you imagined

“Go confidently in the direction of your dreams! Live the life you’ve imagined. As you simplify your life, the laws of the universe will be simpler.” HENRY DAVID THOREAU
